Where California’s numbers come from
Unofficial counts as of Nov. 6, 2026, 12:14 p.m. ET, summed from district results published by the state election office. They are not certified results.
Sources
| Source | Tier | Method | Fetched (ET) |
|---|---|---|---|
| California Secretary of State — Election Results (api.sos.ca.gov JSON feed behind electionresults.sos.ca.gov, U.S. Representative districtwide results) | Official | Results feed | Nov. 6, 12:14 p.m. |
There is no published statewide total to check the summed district votes against.
Notes on California
- Votes are copied exactly from the California Secretary of State JSON feed (https://api.sos.ca.gov/returns/us-rep/district/N, the data source behind https://electionresults.sos.ca.gov/returns/us-rep), one request per district. The human-facing results site is behind bot protection; the API endpoint served plain JSON. Feed ReportingTime for every district: "November 5, 2026, 9:23 a.m." (PT) as of the 2026-11-05T17:35:47Z refresh. These are semi-official, unofficial election-night canvass counts; California counties continue counting vote-by-mail and provisional ballots for weeks, so totals will rise substantially before certification.
- pctReporting is null for every seat: the feed reports only precincts reporting (100% in every district), which in California does not mean 100% of expected votes are counted, so it is not used as a percent-of-vote-counted figure.
- Top-two general election: same-party contests are recorded as-is (D vs D in CA-04, CA-07, CA-11, CA-12, CA-14, CA-29, CA-34, CA-37; R vs R in CA-40). Kevin Kiley (CA-06) appears on the ballot as NPP (No Party Preference) and is coded "I". The feed lists no write-in totals for these contests.
- Districts are the new Proposition 50 (2025) lines; district numbers do not correspond one-to-one with 2024 districts.
- Incumbent flags: the SOS feed reports incumbent=false for every candidate, so incumbent=true was set from public knowledge of sitting House members (including James Gallagher, CA-01, who won the June 2026 special election; Aisha Wahab, CA-14, who won the August 2026 special election to succeed Eric Swalwell and was sworn in 2026-09-02; and both Ken Calvert and Young Kim in the member-vs-member CA-40 race). Open seats: CA-11 (Pelosi), CA-26 (Brownley), CA-38, CA-48 (Issa).
- Race calls come from news reports (no AP/DDHQ data was scraped): AP calls reported by CalMatters, Patch, and 10News (KGTV) live blogs; outcomes stated in the Wikipedia district articles citing AP results; and, for several safe seats with no individually reported call, inference from 270toWin's 2026-11-04 11:40 ET list of House races uncalled by Decision Desk HQ (CA uncalled there: 4, 5, 7, 11, 14, 23, 34, 40; CA-05 was later called by AP). Seats marked uncalled: CA-04, CA-07, CA-11, CA-14, CA-23, CA-40 (matches the 6 uncalled California seats on NBC News at verification, 2026-11-05). CA-34 was updated at verification to called for Angela Gonzales-Torres (D) on the basis of an NBC News Decision Desk projection. NBC News showed 6 California seats uncalled and AP reportedly had 11 uncalled on Nov 4 morning, so call status here may differ from any single outlet.
- The SOS county status endpoint (api.sos.ca.gov/returns/status) returned stale September 2024 data at fetch time and was not used.
- Refresh 2026-11-06T00:44:47Z: votes updated from the same SOS feed, ReportingTime "November 5, 2026, 4:35 p.m." (PT).
- CA-11: CNN projected the D winner by 2026-11-06T00:44:47Z; the Polymarket-odds call was replaced with CNN's projection.
- Refresh 2026-11-06T12:41:24Z: votes updated from the same SOS feed, ReportingTime "November 5, 2026, 6:58 p.m." (PT).
- Refresh 2026-11-06T17:14:50Z: the same feed was re-checked; no new votes since the previous refresh.
